K&N Cold Air Induction System Project

Basically this project is the addition of a K&N Cold Air Induction System to a 2003 Ford Expedition with a 5.4L Triton Engine. I don't have a baseline gas mileage established prior to the modification but know that I was getting on average, 18.75 MPG on the highway from the times that I had measured it (This rate was acheived mainly through Driving Techniques). All measurements you'll find on this site, unless otherwise noted are taken using the method described in the Calculating MPG section. The Net result after adding the K&N Cold Air inductions system was that I increased my average highway gas mileage to 19.5. Thats a net increase of .75 MPG, it doesn't sound like much but in reality it amounts to a 4% increase, which over a period of time can add up to real savings.

K&N Air Filter for Better MPG and More Power

Here is a picture of the K&N High flow air filter that came with the kit. It is sitting within an Air Box that also came with the kit (It's in the background and not easily seen here). The filter is a "lifetime" filter and requires cleaning and recharging with oil every 50,000 miles, more often in harsh or dusty environments.

 Air Flow Sensor Adapter

Above is a picture of the MAF (Mass Air Flow Sensor) Adapter. If you decide to install a CAI kit make sure that it has an adapter for your MAF or you wont be able to use the kit without buying one. Equally important is making sure that the air tube has the correct inlets for any hoses that are used on the original air intake tube. The picture below shows the inlet tubes that are on the K&N replacement tube

Complete K&N Cold Air Induction System, 4% gain in MPG

Above is a picture of the complete K&N Cold Air Induction System installed (The Triton Engine Cover has been left off so you can see the entire system). This kit was a very easy install, total time was approximately 1.5 hours. Not bad for a 4% gain in fuel efficiency!
